Hardik Pandya helps India thump South Africa out of the park

India crushed South Africa by 101 runs in the opening match of their five-match series at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on December 9, 2025. At the heart of this commanding win was Hardik Pandya, whose blazing half-century on his international comeback announced his return to the Indian colors in the most spectacular fashion.
Pandya's journey back to international cricket was anything but smooth. The premier all-rounder sustained a left quadriceps injury during India's Super Four clash against Sri Lanka at the Asia Cup 2025 in September, forcing him to miss the final against Pakistan and the entire tour of Australia. The injury required 74 days of rehabilitation, primarily at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
His return began with domestic cricket, where he showcased his readiness by smashing an unbeaten 77 off 42 balls for Baroda against Punjab in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on December 2, helping his side chase down a challenging 223-run target. In his second match against Gujarat, Pandya demonstrated improved bowling form with economical figures of 1/16 in four overs. These performances proved he was match-fit and ready to rejoin the national squad in Cuttack.
After South Africa captain Aiden Markram won the toss and elected to field first, India's innings began disastrously. Lungi Ngidi struck immediately, removing Shubman Gill in the first over for just four runs. Suryakumar Yadav fell for 12 despite hitting a boundary and a six, while Abhishek Sharma departed for 17, leaving India reeling at 48/3 in the powerplay.
When Pandya walked in at number six with India struggling at 78/4 in the 12th over, the situation demanded someone special. What followed was a counter-attacking display of breathtaking quality. Pandya blazed his way to 59 not out off just 28 balls, studded with six boundaries and four towering sixes.
His assault on Keshav Maharaj yielded two massive sixes that lifted the mood at the packed Barabati Stadium. Against the express pace of Anrich Nortje, who was returning from injury, Pandya plundered 17 runs in a single over, including an audacious punch for four off a 149 kph thunderbolt. His innings was a masterclass in calculated aggression, as he struck his sixth T20I half-century off just 25 balls.
Valuable contributions came from Tilak Varma, who scored 26 off 32 balls, and Axar Patel, who added 23 off 21 deliveries. Jitesh Sharma remained unbeaten on 10 as India posted 175/6 in their 20 overs. For South Africa, Ngidi was the pick of the bowlers with impressive figures of 3/31, while Lutho Sipamla claimed 2/38. Pandya's late fireworks helped India plunder 53 runs in the last five overs, transforming a potentially below-par total into a competitive one.
If Pandya's batting set the stage, India's bowlers delivered an absolute masterclass in pressure bowling. Chasing 176, South Africa's innings imploded spectacularly, collapsing to 74 all out in just 12.3 overs—their lowest total in T20I history.
Arshdeep Singh set the tone by dismissing Quinton de Kock for a duck with just his second delivery of the innings. He struck again in the third over, removing Tristan Stubbs for 14, leaving South Africa at 16/2. His economical spell of 2/14 in two overs provided the perfect start.
Pandya continued his all-round heroics by claiming the prized wicket of David Miller with his very first delivery, adding another dimension to his match-winning performance. Axar Patel was the most economical, producing figures of 2/7, including the crucial wicket of Aiden Markram for 14.
Jasprit Bumrah etched his name into the record books by claiming his 100th T20I wicket, dismissing Dewald Brevis for 22. This landmark made him the first Indian bowler and only the fifth player in international cricket to take 100 wickets in all three formats. Bumrah finished with figures of 2/17, also accounting for Keshav Maharaj.
Varun Chakravarthy picked up 2/19, while Shivam Dube claimed 1/1 to complete the rout. Only four South African batsmen reached double figures, with Brevis's 22 being the highest score. Marco Jansen managed 12, while both Markram and Stubbs scored 14 each before the innings disintegrated.
India's dominant victory held special significance as it ended a frustrating winless streak against South Africa at the Barabati Stadium. The Proteas had won both previous T20Is at this venue—a six-wicket victory in October 2015 and a four-wicket win in June 2022. The comprehensive 101-run margin not only avenged those defeats but also gave India a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Pandya's match-winning performance earned him the Player of the Match award, capping a remarkable comeback story. Speaking after the match, he reflected on his rehabilitation journey: "The last six, seven months have been really amazing from my fitness standpoint. These last 50 days, being away from your loved ones, spending time in NCA, making sure that all these things are covered. It's very satisfying when you come here and the results follow".
With India taking a 1-0 lead in the series, the second T20I is scheduled for Thursday, December 11, in Chandigarh. As both teams build towards the T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka, this opening match served as a statement of intent from the hosts. More importantly, it marked the triumphant return of one of modern cricket's finest all-rounders, with Hardik Pandya proving that class is indeed permanent.
