On a day filled with red flags, strategic pit calls, and an early exit for local favorite Max Verstappen, McLaren demonstrated impressive race pace that left rival teams searching for answers.

Early Chaos and Verstappen's Shock Departure

The afternoon started with high tension along the coastal circuit. Norris launched cleanly from pole position, holding off George Russell into the banked initial turn. Behind them, Antonelli made a swift move past his teammate Russell to claim second position.
The race turned upside down on the very first lap. Verstappen lost control of the rear of his Red Bull coming through a tight section, spinning into the barrier with significant force. While the Dutch driver climbed out unhurt, the incident scattered debris across the tarmac and prompted race officials to bring out a red flag.
When the grid regrouped for a standing restart, Antonelli seized his moment. The nineteen-year-old Italian launched brilliantly off the line, diving past Norris into the first corner to take the lead. Behind the leader, a late Virtual Safety Car deployment altered the fight for the lower podium spots. Haas driver Esteban Ocon pulled over with a mechanical problem, triggering a neutralisation that offered secondary strategy options.

Mercedes Tactics and Internal Management

Mercedes reacted to the Virtual Safety Car by calling Antonelli into the pits for fresh rubber. The stop dropped him behind Russell, who had remained out on track on older tyres. With Antonelli possessing a severe tyre advantage, Mercedes pit wall personnel instructed Russell to step aside and let his younger teammate pass into second position.
Russell complied with the team directive, conceding the spot to Antonelli while keeping Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton behind him. Although Russell had suggested earlier in the race that the drivers work together, he accepted the decision post-race, recognizing that Antonelli had superior pace and would have overtaken him regardless.
Russell held off a fierce late charge from Hamilton, crossing the finish line less than a second ahead of the Ferrari to preserve third place. Hamilton took fourth, followed by Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc in fifth. McLaren's Oscar Piastri crossed in sixth position, while Red Bull's Liam Lawson managed seventh despite carrying a ten-second time penalty for a yellow flag infraction. Nico Hulkenberg earned eighth for Audi, with Fernando Alonso and Pierre Gasly rounding out the top ten point scorers.
